Her Body, Her Choice
Abortion has been a controversial issue since I can remember, with two groups always either in favor or against it. Abortion, as we all know, is killing a fetus within the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. You usually have to be either pro-life or pro-choice. No gray area here. Coming from a religious family, I was raised to think that abortion was evil and should be treated as a crime against life because it leads to murdering an unborn child, a fellow human being.

Legal because it provides women with a choice, but not as the first option because there are many more effective ways to avoid pregnancy than abortion. Abortion is moral and should be legal. I know you've heard this rant before, but it's time to speak out. If a woman's body is under the control of a man or the government, equality does not exist. Abortion is about giving a woman the ability to make her own decisions. A woman has the right to control what happens to her body. The government should not take away that right just because a woman chooses or is forced to have sex, which leads to her decision to have an abortion—Making abortions illegal results in more deaths and many unwanted pregnancies.
Women should be free to have abortions since it is their own body and their right. If she is not ready to have a baby, she should not have to. For example, why shouldn't a mother have a choice if she was going to die if she had the baby? If you read the caption in the image below, do you think it's fair for a woman to die even when the fetus was already dead?
People attend a 'Not one more!' protest after 30-year-old Iza died of septic shock in week 22 of her pregnancy after being denied an abortion despite a dying fetus.
Making abortion illegal does not stop them from happening, resulting in more deaths. Desperate women suffering financial difficulties due to an unwanted pregnancy will continue to risk their lives by getting unsafe abortions.
According to Ana Langer, "a recent research indicated that banning abortion in the U. S. would lead to a 21% increase in the number of pregnancy-related deaths."
Unsafe abortions often cause long-term health problems for the woman. Also, it might result in a woman's death—safe abortions are usually done by trained professionals in clean and sterile conditions. Unsafe abortions are frequently conducted by unlicensed people using unsanitary equipment and having little consideration for the woman's safety. As a result, women who have unsafe abortions are more likely to experience long-term health issues, including infection, sepsis, organ damage, infertility, persistent pain, and psychological and emotional damage.
An unsafe abortion is the only one almost entirely preventable and is one of the leading causes of maternal deaths worldwide.
Every woman who decides to get an abortion has a reason. They may not have the financial means to care for a child. Many young women use drugs and live in poverty; imagine bringing a child into that situation. They may be dealing with personal problems that keep them from providing a nice life for that child. They don't want to go through the trauma of carrying the pregnancy to term and giving up their kid for adoption. Pregnancy might be dangerous for the mother or fetus in certain situations.
There are already many abandoned, mistreated, and unloved children. A law can put unwanted children in unsafe situations. Still, it can never force them to be welcomed, fed, or loved. Many young women use drugs and live in poverty; imagine bringing a child into that situation. Some people are too focused on their own life to think about having to deal with children.
As a result, they continue to have children but do not want or care for them, "resulting in children being placed in foster care, government homes, or jail". They soon realize that no one wants or cares about them. There are already too many unwanted children; making abortion illegal will result in many more.
In some cases, maintaining an unwanted pregnancy might harm both the mother's and the child's quality of life. Another argument against this is that women should not put themselves in such positions if it leads to abortion. Yet, people must understand that sex is a regular aspect of life and that mistakes can happen. What if a woman was raped? Do you know how difficult it would be to carry a child created after such a traumatic experience? You may think adoption is always the option in a case like this. But, we must recognize that traumatic events such as these must be considered when allowing women choice over their bodies.
Another way to look at it is that some people believe a fetus to be a baby. They claim that people think differently only to avoid feeling bad about their wrongdoings. But this isn't always the case.
Abortion should be legal because it is a woman's right, illegal abortion leads to more deaths and unwanted pregnancies. Other than killing a "child," there are other reasons why someone would get an abortion. Making abortion illegal is the worst option. Because it will not prevent abortions; instead, it will make them riskier and increase the risk of death for both the mother and the unborn.
Men, like women, must take responsibility for their acts. Anyone having sex without birth control should be prepared to face the consequences. Unwanted pregnancies shouldn’t happen, but they do. Abortions are less damaging to society than undesired, unloved children. Forcing a woman to have unwanted, unloved children is neither a man's decision nor the government's responsibility.
